Class Chronicle

Friday 24 June:

Thursday 23 June:

We had a presentation on dwell. It's the time the coil is grounded to build up the magnetic field to create a spark. We talked about input and output conditions. Class felt tired and sluggish today.

Wednesday 22 June:
We talked about voltage drop, went over principles of Kerschoff's Law. We signed up students to give ignition subjects on Thursday. Some made up their quizzes they missed. In lab we identified parts of students input sensors and output actuators.

Tuesday 21 June:
Talked about different types of combustion: preignition, detonation, normal, quenching. Then we had a quiz. In Practical, we did troubleshooting if we had enough meter and scope readings of the inputs and outputs done.

Tuesday 14 June:
First day of class: made sure everyone has G-mail account with Google, Demonstrated blogger.com, talked about assessments. Theory will be 4 quizzes, practical will be blog of lab exercises. Blogs to be organized by experiments. For each experiment include: 1)theory information needed to understand exercise, 2) procedure of experiment and results, and 3) reflection about what are good and bad results, including example of bad results and what they can mean.

Wednesday 15 June:
Organized short subject presentations for the next day. Talked about Big 4, what it takes to make an engine run: Mechanical system, fuel system, air in / exhaust out systems, ignition and spark systems. All parts of an engine running well fit into one of these systems, and if you learn to diagnose them, you can test the engine. Beginning to start talking about vacuum and vacuum testing.

Thursday 16 June:
Mini-presentations (with discussion) on octane, calorific values petrol and diesel, air-fuel ratio (during which condition), and bio-fuel. In lab we finished meter readings of inputs and outputs, and then did scope readings of all the inputs and outputs.

Friday 17 June:
In theory we had more mini presentations on air fuel ratio, cetane, octane, etc. We made up quiz questions in class for the quiz on Tuesday. In practical we went to computer lab 129 and practiced with blogs: getting blogs open, adding information, following each other, adding reflections to our blogs.

Here's a link that shows a Porshe 918 race car with hybrid technology that stores electricity during braking in a big flywheel accumulator, then uses the flywheel to create electricity to power two electric motors at two front wheels for an eight second burst of extra power and acceleration.
